Iodide is the ionic form of Iodine which has an oxidation state of -1 meaning it has an extra outer valence electron to share with other atoms or molecules and is thus reactive. Ions are reactive (not good) and readily react with other atoms or molecules to form new chemical "salts" or complex molecules; that is why Iodide is sold and consumed as a salt such as Potassium Iodide, but after consumption, the Iodide does not turn into Iodine.
