To coincide with Worl Health Day on April 7, 2024, the Women In Neglected Tropical Diseases (WINs) association is officially launching its activities in Yaounde. This non-profit organization, supported by SpeakUpAfrica, aims to step up the fight against neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in Africa by drawing on the commitment and expertise of women.

Mapping players and interventions for better coordination

One of the pillars of the WINs association is the creation of an exhaustive map of players and interventions in the field of NTDs in Cameroon. This initiative will establish a comprehensive directory of technical and financial partners, research institutions, civil society organizations and other stakeholders.

“The aim is to draw up a precise inventory of current interventions and identify potential synergies for better coordination and increased efficiency in the fight against NTDs”, explains Prof. Emilienne Epee, President of the WINs association.

Promoting gender equity for lasting impact

WINs recognizes the crucial role played by women in the fight against NTDs. Indeed, women make up the majority of those affected by these diseases, and often assume primary responsibility for caring for the sick.

“The association is committed to promoting gender equity in all its programs and activities, ensuring that women are fully informed, sensitized and involved in decision-making,” stresses Prof. Emilienne Epee.

“It’s not just about taking action for women, but also ensuring that they have their place in the fight, and that equity is respected at all levels,” she adds.

Developing innovative solutions to overcome NTDs

The WINs association encourages research and innovation to develop new, more effective solutions in the fight against NTDs. The association is committed to supporting initiatives aimed at developing more effective diagnostic and treatment tools, developing more efficient prevention strategies, and exploring innovative approaches to financing and advocacy.

“Our ambition is to contribute to the eradication of NTDs in Africa by mobilizing the expertise and commitment of women, promoting innovation and strengthening collaboration between all stakeholders,” says Prof. Hermine Ngalle Bille, Secretary General of WINs.

Exemplary female leadership

The WINs association is led by a trio of influential and committed women: Professor Émilienne Epee, Dr Sara Eyangoh and Professor Hermine Ngalle Bille. Their expertise and clear vision are major assets for the success of the association.

“The launch of the WINs association is an important milestone in the fight against NTDs in Africa,” says Prof. Emilienne Epee, President of the WINs association. “With its holistic approach and commitment to mobilizing women, the association has the potential to significantly improve the health of populations and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.”
